About Me

The challenge Card-DI-ology requires teams to build a structure out of playing cards - with or without glue.

Teams will need to build different structures and analyze the scoring to determine the way to maximize their scoring for the weight held by their structure and any bonus points allowed if glue is not used on the structure.

Many of the concepts covered in the tutorials elsewhere on this site apply to this challenge.

Safety is always important regardless of the type of building materials being used.

General Concepts apply to any type of structure.   Bracing is important.  It may not be in the form you would expect when using wood but even a structure made of cards should be braced.

Review the tutorials on Drawing.  Keeping accurate drawings helps you to plan and to duplicate your structures consistently.

Some of the information in  tools and equipment listed could be beneficial to teams building with cards.

If you elect to use glue on your structure review the Glues section for information.  Remember, how you use a glue is almost as important as the type of glue you use.

Adapt the information in the Construction Jigs section to create jigs for your card structure.

Documenting your work is always important so that you can analyze and re-create your results.

Other considerations:

Cards are available from many different manufacturers.  These cards will come in different sizes, different thicknesses and with different coatings.  You should look at a variety of cards and document such things as:

  • Dimensions

  • Thickness (if you have a micrometer)

  • Weight (Measure the weight of an entire deck of cards to get an average weight of each card)

  • Type of coating on the card

Different types of coatings on the cards may react differently with different glues so if you are planning on using glue then you may want to experiment to see what works best.

The Cardstacker was at the State Fair of Texas this year.  He was trying to break his record for the largest "house of cards" by building a replica of the Dallas, Texas skyline.  Unfortunately, he ran into trouble with humidity in the building he was working in and it took them some time to work out that problem so he lost time and was unable to break the record.

Click HERE to see the "blow down" of his creation at the Texas State Fair.  My family visited the State Fair on the last day so we could watch him use a leaf blower to take down his creation.  He also allowed people into the room after it was over to pickup cards.  We brought a box with us and managed to collect cards that we could use for experimenting with this years' challgne
